For a long time, scientists interested in this labyrinthine microstructure focused on the structure of the neuronal cells. Now other components are looming as far more important than anyone had realized. Neurotransmitters and various brain hormones, for example,

appear to play a significant role in cognitive behavior, causing some investigators to wonder if the brain isn't more like an endocrine gland than a computer. Neurotransmitters also seem to be involved in feelings, because emotional experiences stimulate the release of some of these chemicals. Scientists who are sorting out this finding say it is amazingly complex. The same chemical, for example, will relay different messages depending on what part of the brain it goes to.
